Tokyo, Kyoto & the Japanese Alps 11-Day Escorted Tour from £2899 per person
A visit to Japan would not be complete without visits to the soaring skyscrapers in Tokyo and rich culture of Kyoto, but very few manage to go off the beaten track to see the more rural side of Japan. This 11 day self-guided tour ventures into the beautfiul landscape of the Japanese Alps as well as enjoying the sights and sounds of Tokyo and Kyoto. The trip includes traditional ryokan stays in Yudanaka and Takayama, two full days of private guiding and journeys on the bullet train. |
Day 1: Arrive Tokyo
You will be met on arrival at Narita Airport and provided with tickets for your transfer to the Mitsui Garden Ginza Hotel in Tokyo, for a two night stay.
Day 2: Private Guide in Tokyo
Private tour of the city with a local guide, travelling by public transport as Tokyoites do, giving a real feel for Japan’s capital. Whilst the city is hurtling into the future it still maintains links with the traditions of ancient Japan so the sightseeing possibilities are endless.
Day 3: Tokyo to Yudanaka
Travel into the Japanese Alps by train and spend a night in Yudanaka Onsen, a town famous for its hot spring baths. During the winter months the red faced Macaque ‘snow’ monkeys have taken to keeping warm in the hot springs. You will spend a night on futons at the Shimaya ryokan with a traditional dinner included.
Day 4: Yudanaka to Matsumoto
Travel by train to Matsumoto, an alpine city surrounded by the peaks of the Japanese Alps which is home to one of the only remaining original castles in Japan. You will spend one night at the Buena Vista Hotel.
Day 5; Matsumoto to Takayama
Travel by bus high up into the Japanese Alps before descending into Takayama. You will be staying at the Tanabe ryokan for two nights.
Day 6: Takayama at leisure
A full day to explore the old streets of Takayama, famous for its traditional narrow streets with well-preserved inns, tea houses and merchant houses dating back from the Edo Period. Visits to local sake breweries, the morning markets and nearby folk villages will keep you more than occupied.
Day 7: akayama to Kyoto
Travel by train to Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan, where you will be staying at the Okura Hotel for two nights.
Day 8: Private Guide in Kyoto
Private tour of the city with our local guide and his car. Having guided notable international public figures you can be assured of excellent service from the Kyoto resident. Kyoto showcases the heart and soul of traditional Japan with numerous World Heritage sites, temples, shrines and gardens.
Day 9: Day Trip from Kyoto
Full day to continue exploring Kyoto or make a day trip using included Japan Rail Pass. Possibilities include the vibrant metropolis of Osaka, the ancient capital of Nara or the cosmopolitan port city of Kobe. It is also even possible to make a day trip to Hiroshima.
Day 10: Kyoto to Tokyo
Final chance to experience the bullet train as you travel back to Tokyo. Final night at the Century Southern Tower Hotel amongst the skyscrapers and bright lights of Shinjuku.
Day 11: Departure Transfer
Time at leisure before your transfer to the airport.
