Guide to Malaysia
Guide to Malaysia
Malaysia offers a wealth of variety that reflects its diversity of cultures. There is so much to commend Malaysia. The people are friendly, the climate is tropical, the beaches are perfect, the rainforest scenery is impressive, Kuala Lumpur offers great shopping, dining and architecture, and the wildlife of Borneo is amazing; be inspired by Borneo's private orang-utan tours.
Getting there
The National carrier, Malaysian Airlines flies direct from the UK to Malaysia. In addition there are several airlines offering in-direct flights to Kuala Lumpur via Dubai (Emirates), Singapore (Singapore Airlines) and Abu Dhabi (Etihad Airways) amongst others. The flying time is generally around 13 hours.

Guide to the country
Start your Malaysia holiday in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. This vibrant city offers a contrast in architectural styles with the impressive Petronas Towers standing alongside colonial buildings. The beach resorts of Penang and Langkawi in the west are well known, offering a good choice of hotels, set on sandy beaches. To the east there are the islands of Redang and Tioman, offering superb diving and snorkelling. The east coast of the mainland includes Kuala Terengganu, a region that features picturesque villages where religion and culture are very much a part of everyday life. Malaysian Borneo is a must-see, with its beaches, mountains (Mt.Kinabalu is one of the highest mountains in SE Asia) but above all a wide range of nature, birds and wildlife. Here you can get up close to Orang-utans in Sabah. A great way to experience the country is on a self-drive itinerary. Driving is on the left, signs are in English and the roads are of a good standard. This allows you to explore the lesser-known locations such as historic Malacca and the tea growing, colonial hill towns and villages of the Cameron Highlands.

When to go
Malaysia has a tropical climate and offers warm temperatures throughout the year, with an average monthly temperature ranging between 23°C and 32°C. There is a clear east-west split in the weather. The west coast islands of Penang, Langkawi and Pangkor are at their best weather-wise during December to April, with the east coast enjoying drier weather from April to October. The rainy season for the west is April to October, while the east receives stormy monsoon weather during November and December. The best time to visit Borneo is March to October, with the wettest months being November to February. The capital, Kuala Lumpur remains warm all year round but has less rainfall during June to August.

Important to note
British passport holders don’t need a visa unless they are staying for more than 30 days and the passport has at least six months validity remaining. Malaysia is eight hours ahead of GMT. The currency is Malaysian Ringitt. Vaccinations are not normally required unless you are venturing deep into the jungles of Borneo. For full details of vaccination requirements contact your doctor.
